Hettie Simmons Love (born October 29, 1922 – died July 2023) was a very important person. She was the first African American to get a special business degree called a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from an Ivy League university. She earned her MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1947. This was a big achievement!

Hettie Simmons Love: A Trailblazer

Hettie Simmons Love was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1922. She went to Fisk University and finished her studies there in 1943. After that, she decided to continue her education at the Wharton School, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her MBA degree on June 18, 1947.

Opening Doors for Others

In 2017, an article in Wharton Magazine called Hettie a "trailblazer." This means she was someone who was brave enough to do something new and difficult, making it easier for others to follow. The article said she "opened the door" for both minority students and women who wanted to study business.

Hettie remembered that she was the only Black student at Wharton when she was there. She was also one of only two women in her class. Even though it might have been tough, she found friends. Three male classmates, who were Jewish, invited her to join their study group. This helped her feel like she belonged.

Honored for Her Achievements

Hettie Simmons Love was part of a Black sorority called Alpha Kappa Alpha. She joined it at Fisk University in 1941. This sorority honored her at their meeting in Atlanta in 2016.

Later that same year, the Wharton School also honored her. They celebrated her at their yearly Whitney M. Young Conference in December 2016. These honors showed how much her achievements meant to many people.

Family Life and Legacy

Hettie Simmons married George Hayward Love, Sr. He also earned several degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. George Love became the first African American high school teacher in the Philadelphia school system.

The Loves later moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. There, George helped schools become desegregated, which means making sure students of all races could attend the same schools. Hettie and George raised their children in Harrisburg. They were married for 66 years until George passed away in 2014.

Hettie Simmons Love lived a long and full life. She turned 100 years old in October 2022. She passed away in July 2023. Her life showed how one person can make a huge difference for many others.
