The Story of the Hetty Taylor Ship
Building and Early Journeys
The Hetty Taylor was built in 1874. This ship mostly carried wood products. It sailed from ports like Muskegon, Michigan, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Sister Bay, Wisconsin, and Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. Its home port was Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Hetty Taylor also carried many other types of goods from Milwaukee to different ports.
The Final Voyage
On August 26, 1880, the Hetty Taylor was sailing to Escanaba, Michigan. It had left Milwaukee earlier. Suddenly, the ship ran into a strong, sudden storm called a squall. The crew quickly got into a small boat. They rowed to safety, hoping to find help. They wanted to come back and save the ship before it sank. However, by the time they could return, it was too late. The Hetty Taylor had already gone down into the lake.
