The Story Behind the Name
Paul McCartney has eight grandchildren. One of them used to call him "Grandad." But one day, this grandchild said "Grandude" instead! This new name stuck, and soon all the other grandkids called him "Grandude." The book's title also reminds us of McCartney's famous 1968 song, "Hey Jude."
Meet Grandude
Paul McCartney started making up stories about Grandude. He imagined Grandude as a "retired hippie" who has amazing adventures. Grandude is an older, fun-loving character. He has a gray beard and a small ponytail. He also wears a little hat and a bow tie.
Grandude has a special magic compass. When he rubs it, he and his grandchildren can travel anywhere! Paul McCartney has said that Grandude is not really him. He explained that he doesn't have magic powers himself.
The Adventures of Grandude
The book tells the story of Grandude and his three grandchildren. They go on many exciting adventures using the magic compass. They ride horses with a cowboy in the desert. They also face an army of crabs on a tropical beach. Later, they even dodge an avalanche while having a picnic on a mountain!
