Hickory Barren, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hickory Barren is a small, unincorporated community located in northern Greene County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live and work, but it doesn't have its own official local government like a city or town. This quiet spot is found along Missouri Route H, about two miles north of Fellows Lake. The town of Fair Grove is also nearby, about four miles to the northeast.

History

Hickory Barren has a history stretching back to the 1800s. A post office was opened here in 1846, which helped people send and receive mail for many years. It stayed open until 1906. The community got its unique name from the area around it. There was a grove of hickory trees, and the surrounding land was open, or "barren," meaning it didn't have many trees. So, "Hickory Barren" described the landscape perfectly!
