The Story of Hickory Hill
Hickory Hill has a cool history! It was once a busy place with different kinds of mills.
Early Businesses
In the past, Hickory Hill had:
- Gristmills: These were places where grain (like wheat or corn) was ground into flour.
- Sawmills: These mills were used to cut logs into lumber for building.
- Limekilns: These were special ovens used to heat limestone. The heated limestone was then used for things like fertilizer or making cement.
Community and Post Office
The community was also home to the Little Elk Friends Meeting, a religious group that started in 1825.
A very important event for the town was when the Hickory Hill post office opened on June 18, 1850. The first person in charge of the post office was named Wm. C. Shuler. After the post office was set up, the town officially changed its name from Nottinghamdale to Hickory Hill.
