Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Higdon is a small place located in the northeastern part of Madison County, in the state of Missouri, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community."

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a place that does not have its own local government. This means it is not officially a city or a town. Instead, it is usually governed by the county it is in. People still live there, but they don't have a mayor or city council just for their small area.

The Story of Higdon's Name

Higdon got its name from an important person named Captain William H. Higdon. He was a "pioneer settler" in the area. A pioneer settler was one of the first people to move to and live in a new place, often helping to build and develop it. A post office was opened in Higdon in 1895. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1942.

Higdon's Location

Higdon is situated right above the east bank of the Castor River. This is where the Castor River meets a smaller stream called Dry Branch. A road known as Missouri Route NN goes right past the community. If you travel about seven miles southwest from Higdon, you will reach the town of Fredericktown.
