The original name for this community was Hoch-Amana. This is a German word that means "High Amana". Sometimes it was also called Hohe-Amana.
Its full German name was Amana vor der Höhe. This means "Amana in front of the height" or "Amana in front of the hill".
Back in 1881, High Amana was a busy place. It had several important businesses. These included a general store where people could buy many different things. There was also a sawmill, which cut wood. A machine shop and a blacksmith shop were also part of the community. These shops helped make and fix tools and other metal items.
