A Look Back in Time
Early Days of the Land
Long, long ago, around 1770, a family named Smith came to live in Roaring Gap. The land where High Meadows is now was once their home. Before that, it was a hunting ground for the Cherokee people. A famous explorer, Daniel Boone, even camped near a stream here. This stream still flows through the golf course today! You can also see the old chimney from the original Smith house. It's a cool reminder of the past.
Building High Meadows
In 1963, a person named Robert Glenn Davis had an idea. He wanted to build a summer resort and golf course. He first thought of calling it Alleghany Heights. But later, they decided on the name High Meadows. The golf club officially started on July 1, 1964.
In 1965, Mr. Davis worked with Jim Massey to design the first homes. Mr. Massey was a general contractor and civil engineer. The very first house was built for the Rhodes family in 1965. The second home, for the Fox family, was finished in 1966. By 2016, there were more than 300 private homes in High Meadows.
Club Facilities Grow
The main clubhouse was built in 1966. It was designed by an architect named Claus R. Moberg. The clubhouse sits above the 18th golf hole and has a great view of the lake. The golf course itself was designed by a famous golf course architect, George Cobb.
In 1966, a ski slope was also built at High Meadows. However, it later closed down. Parts of the old ski slope became part of the golf course. The swimming pool and tennis courts were added in the 1970s.
