History of the High Sheriff Role

The first High Sheriff roles started a very long time ago, even before the Norman Conquest in 1066. This was during the time of the Saxons.

In 1908, a special rule was made that changed things. The Lord-Lieutenant became the King or Queen's main representative in a county. After 1922, when the Irish Free State was formed, the High Sheriff role stopped existing in those counties. But it is still an active role in the counties of Northern Ireland, like Fermanagh.
