Higher Barracks was once a military base located on Howell Road in the city of Exeter. It was a place where soldiers lived and trained for many years.

History of the Barracks

The Higher Barracks were built a long time ago, in 1794. This was during a time when Britain was worried about events happening in France. The barracks were created to help protect the country.

Higher Barracks During World Wars

During the First World War, the barracks became a military hospital. Injured soldiers were brought here for care.

In the Second World War, the barracks played another important role. They became a base for American soldiers. These soldiers were part of the United States 500th Medical Collecting Company. They were getting ready for the Normandy landings, a very big event in the war.

Later Years and Closure

From 1980 to 1988, students from Exeter University used the barracks for military training. This group was called the Exeter University Officer Training Corps. They learned important skills there before moving to another base.

In 1987, a group called the Royal Army Pay Corps moved into the barracks. Their job was to handle money and payments for the army. They stayed at Higher Barracks for about ten years.

The barracks finally closed in 1997. The land was then used to build new homes in 1998.
