The Highland Hotel is a very old and important building in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's also known as the Hudson Hotel. This building was put up in 1906. It worked as a hotel for many years, until the 1970s.

Later, in 1983–84, the building was fixed up. It was changed into office spaces. The Highland Hotel is special because it's one of the few buildings left in Albuquerque that shows the "Chicago School" style from the early 1900s. This style used to be very common.

Because of its history, the hotel is recognized as important. It's part of the Huning Highlands Historic District. This district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city of Albuquerque has also named it a historic landmark.

Building a Landmark: The Hotel's Story

The Highland Hotel was built in 1906. A man named Joshua Raynolds had it constructed. It replaced an older hotel with the same name. That first hotel had unfortunately burned down in 1903.

In November 1905, a local newspaper, the Albuquerque Citizen, shared exciting news. They reported that the empty land where the old hotel stood would soon be beautiful again. A new three-story building was planned. It would be made of brick and stone.

Joshua Raynolds also built another nearby building. It was called the Occidental Life Insurance Building. Both buildings looked similar in style. However, the Occidental Building was one story taller. It was later taken down in 1978.

From Hotel to Offices: Changes Over Time

The new Highland Hotel had shops on its first floor. The second and third floors were for hotel rooms. In 1922, the hotel changed its name to the Hudson Hotel. It kept operating under this name until at least 1976.

By the 1980s, the building was empty and needed a lot of work. It was part of a bigger project called Union Square redevelopment. From 1983 to 1984, the hotel was carefully restored. It was then changed into office spaces. A company called Hutchinson, Brown & Partners finished this project.

Looking at the Hotel's Design

The Highland Hotel is a three-story building made of brick. It shows a simple style called "Chicago School" or "Commercial style" architecture.

Key Features of the Building

The front of the building is very balanced. It has 12 sections, called bays. Each bay on the second and third floors has a rounded arch at the top. These arches are in a style called Romanesque. The two middle sections share one larger arch.

The second and third floors are separated by special panels. The ground floor has a balanced glass storefront. This means it has large windows for shops. There are also three entrances. The very top of the building has a decorative edge, called a cornice. Above that is a low wall, called a parapet. It has simple brick designs.
