History of the Highland Park Police Station
This police station was built between 1925 and 1926. It cost about $100,000 to build. The station officially opened in April 1926. Important people like Chief Edgar Davis and Police Commissioners attended the opening ceremony.
In the early 1980s, the building was found to be unsafe during earthquakes. Because of this, the Los Angeles Police Department moved its Northeast Division to a new building in 1983.
To save the old station from being torn down, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission declared it a Historic Cultural Monument in January 1984. Just two months later, in March 1984, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This makes it the only police station in California listed on the National Register.
In June 2025, the Police Museum was damaged during city unrest. An anonymous person generously donated $4,000 to help fix the building, which had been graffitied. As of August 2025, the museum was still being repaired. The museum clarified that it has no connection with housing immigration agents.
Filming Location for TV Shows
Because it is the last police station in Los Angeles built in the 1920s, many TV shows and movies want to film there. The city's film office often booked the building months in advance. It has been used as a police station in shows like "Mathnet" (1987–88) and "Pawnee" (2011).
Los Angeles Police Museum: Explore Police History
Today, the building is home to the Los Angeles Police Museum. Here, you can see many interesting items. These include old photographs, police uniforms, badges, and even real squad cars. There is also a paddy wagon and vehicles that show bullet damage.
The museum tells the story of the LAPD from its start in 1869 until today. You can explore the original jail cells of the Highland Park Police Station. There is also a display of the first policewoman's uniform in the country. This uniform was worn by LAPD officer Alice Stebbins Wells in 1910. The museum also keeps important records like LAPD annual reports and old police magazines. You can visit the museum from Wednesday to Saturday, between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm.
