Highland Township was started by pioneer families in 1835. A big reason it grew was the railroad. Trains made it easy to move lumber and products from local factories. This helped the township develop quickly.

In 2003, Highland Township decided to keep its country feel. It also wanted to protect its strong connection to horses and riding. So, it declared itself an "equestrian community." This means it actively supports horse riding and related activities.

By 2006, Highland Township became Michigan's first official equestrian community. This was thanks to the hard work of groups like the Highland Equestrian Conservancy.
