Hightower is a small community in Liberty County, Texas, United States. It's not an official city or town with set borders. Instead, it's a geographic area centered around where two roads, Texas FM 787.svg FM 787 and Texas FM 2518.svg FM 2518, cross. In Hightower, you'll find small farms, pastures for animals, tree plantations, and homes. There are also small churches and a large lumber mill operated by Georgia Pacific.

Where Did Hightower Get Its Name?

In 1899, this area became an official place called Lamb. It received a mail stop on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway, which is now the BNSF Railway. The name Lamb came from the last name of its first postmaster, Charles C. Lamb.

Later, in 1912, the area's name was changed to Hightower. This new name honored a district judge named Lewis B. Hightower Sr.. He lived in the area and served as a judge for the Ninth Judicial District from 1888 until he passed away in 1918.

How Hightower Works: Roads, Water, and Power

The roads in Hightower are taken care of by the county government. A BNSF Railway track also runs through Hightower. This track connects the nearby cities of Cleveland and Silsbee.

For drinking water, people in Hightower use private wells that they drill themselves. There isn't a public water system that brings water to homes. Similarly, homes use private septic tanks for wastewater, as there is no public sewer system. Electricity is supplied by the Sam Houston Electric Cooperative, often called SHECO. There is no public natural gas service. So, if people want to use gas appliances, they need to buy and install their own private propane tanks.
