Hilda Winifred Maizels was born in London, England, in 1896. Her father, Joseph Maizels, was a jeweler who came from Poland. Her mother was Deborah Lipman.
Hilda first worked as a teacher. She started writing books after she moved to Nottingham in the 1920s.
Her Famous Books
Hilda Winifred Lewis wrote many historical novels. These are stories set in the past, often about real people or events. One of her well-known historical novels was I Am Mary Tudor (1972).
She also wrote a popular book for young adults called The Gentle Falcon. This book was even made into a television show!
One of her most famous children's books is The Ship that Flew (1939). This exciting story combines Norse mythology (old stories from northern Europe) with time travel. Imagine a ship that can fly through time!

Hilda Lewis wrote a novel in 1946 called The Day is Ours. This book was about a young girl who was deaf. It was later turned into a film called Mandy in 1952.
The idea for The Day is Ours came from her husband, Professor M. Michael Lewis. He worked at the University of Nottingham and was an expert in teaching deaf children.
Many of Hilda Lewis's books are not printed anymore. However, you can still find some of them. For example, The Ship that Flew was re-released in 1998. Some of her young adult novels are also available as e-books.
