The Gentle Falcon is an exciting historical novel written by Hilda Lewis. It tells the story of King Richard II and his young wife, Isabella. The book is special because it's told from the viewpoint of Isabella's close friend. Oxford University Press first published it in 1952. Later, the BBC made it into a TV show in 1954.

Hilda Lewis wrote many historical books for grown-ups. She also wrote two other history novels for young people. These were Harold Was My King (about Harold Godwinson) and Here Comes Harry.

What's the Story About?

The main character is Isabella Clinton. She is the only child of a French noblewoman and an English soldier. Her father has passed away, making her the heir to his land. But Isabella would rather work in the fields than learn how to be a proper noblewoman. She is known for speaking her mind directly.

After her father's death, it seems that the Black Prince has forgotten Isabella and her mother. After a long time, King Richard finally calls Isabella to court. She is asked to be a companion to her young relative, Isabella of France. This young French girl will soon become the Queen of England.

Through Isabella Clinton's eyes, we see how Isabella of France grows to love King Richard. The Queen is only seven years old when we first meet her. Yet, she acts very mature for her age. However, many sad things happen to her throughout the book. Even though she feels great sorrow, she often hides it.

From Book to TV Show!

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) created a TV series based on The Gentle Falcon. This series had seven episodes. It started airing on June 15, 1954. Glen Alyn played the adult Isabella. Victoria Nolan played Isabella when she was a young girl.
