Hilda Theobald (1901–1985) was a British artist who was very good at making sculptures. She was especially known for creating "portrait busts," which are sculptures of people's heads and shoulders.

Her Life and Art

Hilda Theobald was born in 1901 in a place called Soham in Cambridgeshire, England. She went to school at St Edmund's School in Hunstanton. Her mother was from Cambridgeshire, and her father, who was a farmer, came from Norfolk.

Even though Hilda didn't go to a full-time art school, she loved to paint with watercolors. This interest led her to take Saturday morning classes at the Norwich School of Art. There, she learned how to work with clay and create sculptures.

Over time, Hilda became very skilled at making her own sculptures. She would often create portrait heads and busts. She used different materials like resin, bronze, and even silver to cast her artworks.

Hilda lived in East Dereham for many years. She held several solo exhibitions, which means she showed her art by herself, in the Norfolk and East Anglia areas. From the 1940s onwards, she also joined in exhibitions with the Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle, a group for artists.

Her sculptures can be found in different places. For example, she made a special font (a basin for holy water) with four silver panels for a church in Toftwood. She also created a sculpture for a church in Great Snoring. Another one of her works is a bronze bust for a store in High Wycombe. Her portrait busts are even in collections as far away as Texas, Kenya, and Germany!
