Hilja Keading is an American artist born in 1960. She is well-known for her exciting video art creations. Her art often uses many video screens at once to tell a story or show an idea.

Early Life and Education

Hilja Keading was born in Berkeley, California, on May 16, 1960. She studied art at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She earned her first art degree in 1982. Later, in 1986, she received a master's degree. Her studies focused on sculpture and new kinds of art.

Artistic Career

Keading mostly creates video installations that use multiple screens. This means her art often involves several videos playing at the same time. These videos are usually projected onto walls or shown on monitors.

Famous Art Projects

One of her most famous works is The Bonkers Devotional (2007). This art piece uses four video screens. It shows Hilja Keading spending time with a real black bear named Bonkers in a small room. This artwork has been shown in many places. Art critics have praised it a lot.

A critic from the Los Angeles Times called it "a powerful piece." Another critic, Micol Hebron, wrote that watching Keading and the bear together reminds us how complex our world is.

Keading also created a large video filmstrip called SPLASH. This artwork has 28 channels and is always on display. You can see it at the Tom Bradley International Terminal at the Los Angeles Airport.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Hilja Keading's art has been shown all over the world. She has had her own art shows. Her work has also been part of big group exhibitions. These include shows at the Getty Museum in 2008 and the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1994. Her art has traveled to Germany and France too.

She has received many important awards and grants. In 2014, she won the Anonymous Was A Woman Award. In 2013, she received the FOCA Fellowship. This award recognizes artists who have made big contributions to the art scene in California.

In 2008, Keading was featured in a book called California Video: Artists and Histories. This book highlights important California video artists. It shows how they helped develop video art through new ideas and technology.

Today, Hilja Keading teaches art at the University of California, Riverside.

  • The Bonkers Devotional (2007): This video installation uses large projections. Images of trees surround a room. Inside, two life-sized videos show Keading with a trained bear named Bonkers.
  • Backdrop: This artwork uses nine video channels. It shows Keading trying to fix a leaky water hose with Post-it notes. These videos are projected on walls and shown on floor monitors.
  • Amazing Grace: This was Keading's first series of short videos. They showed unscripted performances.
  • The Gospel According to This Moment: This is a multi-room installation. It was filmed over two years in different locations, including the Colorado plains. It features young people from Garden City, Kansas. The title was inspired by an essay by David Henry Thoreau.
