Hilliard, sometimes called Kings, is a small place in Walker County, Alabama, in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Hilliard is located about 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Jasper, right along Alabama State Route 124.
A Look at Hilliard's Past
Hilliard has an interesting history because it was once a very important place for Walker County. It was the first county seat of Walker County. A county seat is like the main office for a county. It's where the county government does its work, like holding court and keeping important records.
Being the county seat meant Hilliard was the center of activity for the area. However, over time, the county seat was moved to Jasper. This often happens when a new location becomes more central or easier for people to reach. Even though it's not the county seat anymore, Hilliard remains a part of Walker County's history.
