Hillsboro is a small, unincorporated community located in Prairie Township, Henry County, Indiana. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes or businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Hillsboro was once known by a different name: Dan Webster.

Exploring Hillsboro's Past

Hillsboro was officially planned and mapped out, or platted, in 1831. The community received its name because it was built on a high piece of land, giving it a "lofty elevation."

Why Was Hillsboro Called Dan Webster?

For a time, the post office in Hillsboro had a different name: Dan Webster. This was because another place in Indiana already had the name Hillsboro. To avoid confusion, the post office here used the name Dan Webster. This post office served the community from 1851 until 1867.

Hillsboro's Early Industry

In 1840, a factory that made woolen products was built in Hillsboro. It was located on the south side of the community, near the Little Blue River. This factory was replaced by a larger one in 1852. It produced and sold items like yarn, cloth, and blankets. This shows that Hillsboro was an active place with its own industries in the past.
