Hillsborough is a suburb in Christchurch, New Zealand. It has both homes and businesses. It is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) south-east of the main city center.
History of Hillsborough
Hillsborough was first owned by Edward Garland. He and his wife Annie settled the land in 1854. They called their farm Broomfield Farm.
Edward Garland raised cattle on the lower lands near the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River. He also had sheep on the slopes of the Port Hills.
It is not clear when the name Hillsborough started being used. But over time, Broomfield Farm became known only as Hillsborough. By 1945, when the area joined Christchurch, everyone used the name Hillsborough.
You can still see the area's history in some street names. For example, Garlands Road is a main street. It is named after the Garland family and follows where their original driveway used to be.
