The Beginning of Hillside Books
Hillside Books started in 1989. A person named Lydie Leforestier was in charge of the company. It first began in Canterbury, a city in England. Later, the company moved to a different place nearby called Lindfield, West Sussex.
What Hillside Books Did
Hillside Books had a huge collection of books, about 25,000 different titles! Many people said they had most of the important books about insects from all over the world.
Special Books They Published
Hillside Books worked on many important books for insect experts. Some of these included:
- Volumes 25 to 30 of a big series called The Beetles of the World. They also published extra parts for this series.
- They continued a project by Jean-Claude Weiss called The Parnassiinae of the world parts 3 and 4. Parnassiinae are a type of butterfly.
- Another important book was The Monograph of the genus Morpho part 3, written by Patrick Blandin. Morpho butterflies are known for their bright blue wings.
Insect Journals and Equipment
Hillside Books was also the only place to get two special insect magazines, Besoiro and Coléoptères. These are types of entomological journals.
They also sold special tools for insect collectors. This included insect pins and mounting cards. These tools were very popular with insect scientists in other parts of Europe, but not as much in the United Kingdom.
The End of Hillside Books
In June 2011, Hillside Books stopped its work. Another company, Erich Bauer, Goecke & Evers from Germany, took over. They continued to publish the books by Jean-Claude Weiss. They also sold the remaining books that Hillside Books had in stock.
