The Historic Hinton Trail

Hinton Trail gets its name from an old path that pioneers used. This trail started near Jasper and went to Hinton. From Hinton, it continued north towards what is now Grande Prairie. This historic route helped people travel and settle in new areas.

How the Trail Worked

The trail followed natural paths like Nose Creek. It crossed the Wapiti River and then went overland to the Redwillow River. This journey was important for early settlers and traders. It connected different parts of Alberta.

The very first post office in Hinton Trail was set up in a home. This was the home of Stan Ronksley. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office was a vital link to the outside world. It operated until 1968.

Craigellachie School

Right across from the Ronksley home was the Craigellachie School. This school was built in 1922. It was a one-room log building. The school was not just for learning. It also served as the main meeting place for everyone in the community. The school closed its doors in 1948.

The Hinton Trail Hall

As the community grew, they needed a bigger place to meet. So, the Hinton Trail Hall was built in 1947. This hall took over from the school as the main community gathering spot. It hosted events and brought people together.
