Hiquingaje I was an important leader, known as an Irecha (or Cazonci), of the Purépecha Empire in ancient Mexico. He ruled from the city of Patzcuaro. Hiquingaje I was the son of Tariacuri, who founded the Purépecha Empire. Tariacuri likely passed away around the year 1350 CE.

Who Was Hiquingaje I?

Hiquingaje I was the second Irecha, or supreme ruler, of the powerful Purépecha Empire. This empire was a major civilization in what is now Mexico. He took over leadership after his father, Tariacuri, passed away. Hiquingaje I's rule was centered in the city of Patzcuaro.

Family and Succession Challenges

Hiquingaje I had several sons, including Hiquingaje II. However, none of his sons became the next Irecha after him. This was unusual because leaders often passed their power to their children. Instead, his second cousin, Hiripan, became the next ruler.

Purépecha Empire's Unique Rules

The Purépecha Empire had a very special way of choosing its leaders. Tariacuri, the founder, set up rules for succession. These rules meant that the leadership of the entire empire would rotate among three main cities. These cities were Patzcuaro, Ihuatzio, and Tzintzuntzan.

How Leadership Rotated

When Hiquingaje I died, it was Ihuatzio's turn to lead the empire. Because of this system, Hiripan, who was the king of Ihuatzio, became the new Irecha. This also meant that Patzcuaro, Hiquingaje I's city, became part of the larger realm ruled from Ihuatzio. This unique system helped keep power balanced among the different parts of the empire.
