Captain Hiram Cox (1760–1799) was a British diplomat. He worked in places like Bengal and Burma during the 1700s. A city in Bangladesh, called Cox's Bazar, is named after him.
Who Was Captain Hiram Cox?
Captain Cox was an officer for the East India Company. This was a big British trading company. He became the leader of a place called Palongkee. This happened after Warren Hastings became the Governor of Bengal, a very important job in India.
Captain Cox was sent to help with a long-standing problem. There was a conflict between people who had fled from Arakan and the local Rakhain people. He started a huge project to help these refugees settle down in the area. He made a lot of progress in this important work.
Sadly, Captain Cox died in 1799 before he could finish his project. To remember his hard work in helping the refugees, a market was started and named after him. This market became known as Cox's Bazar, which means "Cox's Market."
Captain Cox's Other Work
Captain Cox was also a member of the Asiatic Society. This group studied Asian culture. He wrote articles about Asian culture for their journal, called Asiatic Researches.
He is also known for his idea about the game of chess. He believed that chess started as a game played by four people. This idea is called the Cox-Forbes theory. However, this theory has since been proven incorrect by other historians.
