Hiroshi Matsuda (松田 浩, born September 2, 1960) is a well-known Japanese football manager and former player. He used to play as a defender. Today, he is the manager for the football team Tegevajaro Miyazaki.
Playing Career
Matsuda was born in Nagasaki, Japan, on September 2, 1960. After finishing his studies at University of Tsukuba, he joined a football club called Mazda in 1984. This club later became known as Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
He quickly became a regular player for the team, playing as a central defender. In 1987, his team was a runner-up in the Emperor's Cup, which is a big football tournament in Japan.
In 1992, the old Japan Soccer League changed into a new league called the J1 League. Even though his team finished second in the J1 League in 1994, Matsuda didn't play as much.
In 1995, he moved to another team, Vissel Kobe, which was in the Japan Football League at the time. In 1996, Vissel Kobe finished second and was promoted to the J1 League. After this successful season, Matsuda decided to retire from playing football.
Managerial Career
After he stopped playing, Matsuda started coaching at Vissel Kobe in 1997. He worked as a coach for several years. In July 2002, he became the main manager for Vissel Kobe because the team was not doing well. He helped the team stay in the J1 League that season.
In 2003, Matsuda moved to manage Avispa Fukuoka, a team in the J2 League. In 2005, his team finished second, which meant they were promoted to the J1 League. However, in May 2006, he was let go from the team because of poor results.
Later in August 2006, he returned to Vissel Kobe as a coach. When the manager left, Matsuda took over again. He led Vissel Kobe to finish third in the 2006 season, which also earned them a promotion to the J1 League. He continued to manage the team until 2008.
In 2009, Matsuda became the manager for Tochigi SC, a newly promoted J2 League team. Even though their first season was tough, the team performed well in the middle of the league from 2010 to 2012. However, in September 2013, he was let go again due to the team's performance.
More recently, on May 4, 2021, he joined V-Varen Nagasaki, another J2 club, but he resigned on June 12, 2022. On August 17, he was appointed manager of the J1 club Gamba Osaka until the end of that season. Finally, on February 1, 2023, Matsuda became the new manager of the J3 club Tegevajaro Miyazaki, where he is currently working.
