Hiroshige Yanagimoto (柳本 啓成, Yanagimoto Hiroshige, born October 15, 1972) is a former Japanese football player. He was a skilled defender who played for several top clubs in Japan. He also represented his country on the Japan national team.

Playing for Clubs

Hiroshige Yanagimoto was born in Higashiosaka on October 15, 1972. After finishing high school, he joined a football club called Mazda in 1991. This club later changed its name to Sanfrecce Hiroshima.

Time at Sanfrecce Hiroshima

At Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Yanagimoto quickly became a key player. He usually played as a "right side-back," which is a defender who also helps with attacking on the right side of the field. During his time there, the club achieved great success.

  • In 1994, Sanfrecce Hiroshima finished second in the J1 League, which is Japan's top football league.
  • The club also reached the finals of the Emperor's Cup in both 1995 and 1996, finishing second each time.

Yanagimoto played for Sanfrecce Hiroshima until 1998.

Moving to Other Clubs

In 1999, Yanagimoto moved to Gamba Osaka, a club from his home area. He played there for four seasons. Then, in 2003, he moved to a rival team, Cerezo Osaka. With Cerezo Osaka, he again reached the final of the Emperor's Cup in 2003, where they finished second. Hiroshige Yanagimoto stopped playing professional football at the end of the 2006 season.

Starting His International Career

In January 1995, Hiroshige Yanagimoto was chosen to play for the Japan national team. His first game for Japan was on January 8, 1995, against Argentina in a tournament called the 1995 King Fahd Cup. After this first game, he became a regular player for Japan, often playing as the right side-back.

Key Matches and Injury

In 1996, Yanagimoto played in all of Japan's matches, including the 1996 AFC Asian Cup. He was an important part of the team. However, in March 1997, during the qualification games for the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he got injured. This injury meant he had to leave the national team. By 1997, he had played 30 games for Japan.
