Hiroyuki Imaishi (born October 4, 1971) is a famous Japanese anime director and animator. He also helped start Studio Trigger, a well-known animation studio. His unique style includes very fast and exciting animation. He is also known for his detailed storyboards and strong directing. Before starting Studio Trigger, he worked at Gainax. Some of his most popular works are Gurren Lagann (2007), Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (2010), Kill la Kill (2013), Promare (2019), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022).

Early Career in Anime
Hiroyuki Imaishi started his career in 1995. He joined Gainax, a famous anime studio. There, he worked as a key animator for Neon Genesis Evangelion. This was a very popular anime series.
He also helped with other projects early on. These included FLCL, Diebuster, and Oval X Over. He even worked on the ending animation for Paradise Kiss. Imaishi is also known for creating manga scenes. These appeared in Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances) and FLCL. Later, he directed the anime film Dead Leaves in 2004. He also directed the first episode of Re: Cutie Honey.
Becoming an Anime Director
Imaishi's first time directing a full series was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in 2007. This anime won an Excellence Prize at the 2007 Japan Media Arts Festival. Imaishi himself received an award at the twelfth Animation Kobe Festival. In 2008, Gurren Lagann won "best television production." It also won "best character design" at the Tokyo International Anime Fair.
After this success, he directed Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. A big influence on Imaishi's work is Yoshinori Kanada. Imaishi often includes special tributes to Kanada's art. You can see these tributes in his anime titles. These include Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.
In 2011, Imaishi left Gainax. He then started his own studio, Studio Trigger. His first project as director at Studio Trigger was Kill la Kill. He also directed the opening for season 2 of Black Dynamite.
