Early Career in Animation
Hiroyuki Imaishi started his career after drawing comics for a group that created fan-made works. In 1995, he began working at Gainax as an in-between animator for Neon Genesis Evangelion. An in-between animator draws the frames that go between the main drawings to make movement smooth.
Some of his early jobs included guiding animation, creating storyboards, and drawing key animation for shows like Kare Kano (also known as His and Her Circumstances). He also worked on FLCL, Diebuster, Oval X Over, and the ending animation for Paradise Kiss. Later, he directed Dead Leaves, an anime film from 2004. He also directed the first episode of Re: Cutie Honey.
Becoming a Director
Hiroyuki Imaishi made his debut as a series director with Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in 2007. This anime won an Excellence Prize at the 2007 Japan Media Arts Festival. Imaishi himself received an award at the twelfth Animation Kobe Festival. In 2008, Gurren Lagann was named "best television production" and won for "best character design" at the Tokyo International Anime Fair.
After this success, he directed the anime series Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. A big influence on his work as an animator and director is Yoshinori Kanada. Imaishi often includes special tributes to Kanada's art in his anime titles, such as Dead Leaves, Gurren Lagann, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.
In 2011, Imaishi left Gainax and co-founded Studio Trigger. His first directing job at his new studio was Kill la Kill. He also directed the opening animation for the second season of Black Dynamite.
