Hiroyuki Sakai (坂井 宏行, Sakai Hiroyuki, born April 2, 1942) is a famous Japanese chef. He is known for his amazing skills in French cuisine, which is a style of cooking from France. Many people know him best from the Japanese TV show Iron Chef.

Chef Sakai was the second and longest-serving "Iron Chef French" on the show. He joined in 1994 and stayed for nine seasons! He had one of the best winning records among all the Iron Chefs. He even became the "King of Iron Chefs" after winning a big tournament. He then beat a top chef from around the world, Alain Passard, in a final cooking battle. His record on Iron Chef was 70 wins, 15 losses, and 1 tie.

On TV, Chef Sakai was easy to spot in his bright red French chef's uniform. He would often walk into the Kitchen Stadium holding a pear. People called him the "Delacroix of French cuisine" because his dishes looked like beautiful art. He was also super good at cooking fish, so fans gave him the nickname "Seafood Sakai."

Chef Sakai's Journey

How He Became an Iron Chef

Chef Sakai was asked to join Iron Chef by the show's producer, Toshihiko Matsuo. At first, Sakai thought the show would only last about six months, and he would only appear a few times. But it turned out to be a huge hit, and he stayed for six years!

When he first joined, some other chefs weren't sure about Iron Chef. They thought it might not be good for their reputations. Also, they wondered how French dishes, which often take a long time, could be made so quickly on TV. But as the show became super popular, everyone, including other chefs and fans, started to support him.

Learning from Challenges

Like many great chefs, Sakai didn't like to lose. After his first loss, he tried to be cheerful, but his staff was very upset. His daughter even got teased at school when he lost, though that didn't happen very often! To keep getting better, Chef Sakai would often taste the food his opponents made. He would also ask their assistants questions after the cooking battles.

Life Outside the Show

Away from the TV cameras, Chef Sakai owns and runs his own restaurant called La Rochelle. It's located in Aoyama, Japan. He named his restaurant after La Rochelle, a city in France where he once trained as a young chef. He is also part of a special group called the Club des Trente, which is for French chefs in Japan. A very important mentor for him was Fujio Shido, who was a pioneer of French cooking in Japan.

After Iron Chef

After the main Iron Chef series ended, Chef Sakai still appeared in special episodes. In one special in New York, he showed students at the Culinary Institute of America how to prepare salmon. He also appeared on Iron Chef America. There, he cooked against American chefs like Bobby Flay and teamed up with Mario Batali.

In 2009, Chef Sakai received a special award called the Gendai no Meiko. This award honors Japan's best artists and craftspeople in different fields. In 2010, he was a guest judge for the finals of MasterChef Australia. He also appeared as a guest on Iron Chef Thailand in 2013.

Memorable Cooking Battles

Chef Sakai had many exciting battles on Iron Chef. Here are some of his most famous ones:

  • First Win: His very first battle was against Guy Shokr. Chef Sakai won by cooking amazing dishes using oysters.
  • Club Mistral Challenges: A group of chefs from "Club Mistral" challenged Sakai many times. Only one of them, Kazutaka Okabe, managed to beat him in a battle using lamb. Chef Sakai won against other challengers from this club using ingredients like caviar, truffle, and milk.
  • Battles with Toshiro Kandagawa: He battled the famous Japanese chef Toshiro Kandagawa twice. In 1995, Sakai won using lotus root. But in 2001, Kandagawa beat him in a battle with red snapper.
  • Overtime Thriller: In 1997, Chef Sakai had his only overtime battle against Rory Kennedy. The main ingredient was European rabbit. They tied, so they had to cook again! In the overtime round, Sakai used European pigeon and won.
  • Rivalry with Chen Kenichi: Chef Sakai faced Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi two times. Chen won their first match using chicken. But in the "King of Iron Chefs Tournament" final in 1999, Sakai beat Chen using lobster to become the champion!
  • World's Best Chef Battle: After winning the King of Iron Chefs Tournament, Sakai faced Alain Passard, a top chef from France. Using Long-Gang Chicken, Chef Sakai made four incredible dishes. He won the judges' decision, proving he was one of the best chefs in the world!
