Playing for Clubs

Hiroyuki Shirai was born in Fuji, Japan, on June 17, 1974. After finishing high school, he started his professional football career in 1993. He joined his hometown team, Shimizu S-Pulse.

Moving to Different Teams

Time at Shonan Bellmare

In 2000, Shirai joined J2 League club Shonan Bellmare. He stayed with this team for six seasons, which is a long time for a football player! He played many matches for them.

Later Career and Retirement

After Shonan Bellmare, Shirai moved to Vegalta Sendai in 2006. He started as a regular player, meaning he played in most games. However, he got an injury in June 2006. This injury made him lose his regular spot on the team. In 2008, he joined Japan Football League club FC Ryukyu. He only played three matches there because of his injury. Hiroyuki Shirai decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2008 season.

Playing for Japan's National Team

In July 1996, Hiroyuki Shirai was chosen to play for the Japan U-23 national team. This was a big honor because he got to play in the 1996 Summer Olympics.

The "Miracle of Miami"

At the Olympics, Shirai played in two matches. Even though Japan won two games, they did not make it past the first round. One of their wins was very special: Japan beat the strong Brazil team in their first game. This famous victory is known as the "Miracle of Miami" (マイアミの奇跡) in Japan. It was a huge surprise and a memorable moment for Japanese football fans.
