Hiroyuki Taniguchi (谷口 博之, Taniguchi Hiroyuki, born 27 June 1985) is a Japanese former football player. He played as a Midfielder and was known for his strong performances. He last played for Sagan Tosu before he retired.

Playing Career

Hiroyuki Taniguchi started his football journey in the youth teams of Yokohama F. Marinos. He became a professional player in 2004 when he joined Kawasaki Frontale. He played for Kawasaki Frontale for seven years, from 2004 to 2010. During his time there, he became a very important player for the team. He played 190 league games and scored 40 goals for them.

After leaving Kawasaki Frontale, Taniguchi played for Yokohama F. Marinos from 2011 to 2012. He then moved to Kashiwa Reysol in 2013. His last club was Sagan Tosu, where he played from 2014 until he retired at the end of the 2019 season. In total, he played 361 league games and scored 53 goals in his professional career.

National Team Experience

In August 2008, Hiroyuki Taniguchi was chosen to play for the Japan U-23 national team. He was part of the squad that went to the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

At the Olympics, he played in all three matches for Japan as an attacking midfielder. Even though Japan did not advance past the first round, it was a big achievement for Taniguchi to represent his country at such a major event.

Awards and Achievements

Hiroyuki Taniguchi won several awards and helped his teams achieve success during his career. These are called "Honours" in football.

  • Kawasaki Frontale
    • J2 League: He helped Kawasaki Frontale win the J2 League in 2004. This meant the team was promoted to the top league, the J1 League.
    • He also helped Kawasaki Frontale finish second (runners-up) in the J1 League three times: in 2006, 2008, and 2009.
    • They were also runners-up in the J.League Cup twice: in 2007 and 2009.
  • Kashiwa Reysol
    • J.League Cup: He won the 2013 with Kashiwa Reysol. This is a major cup competition in Japan.
  • Individual Awards
    • J.League Best XI: In 2006, he was chosen as one of the best 11 players in the J.League.
    • J.League Cup New Hero Award: He won this award in 2006. This award is given to young players who perform very well in the J.League Cup.
