The History of the Southern Dynasties is an important book about ancient Chinese history. It's part of a huge collection called the Twenty-Four Histories, which are official history books from China. This book has 80 volumes, like big chapters, and tells the story of southern China from the year 420 to 589 AD.

It covers four main dynasties, or ruling families, that lived in southern China during a time called the Northern and Southern dynasties period. These dynasties were the Liu Song, Southern Qi, Liang, and Chen.

A historian named Li Dashi started writing this book. After he passed away, his son, Li Yanshou, finished the work between 643 and 659 AD. Li Yanshou was also a historian and helped put together other history books during the early Tang dynasty. What's cool about this book is that it wasn't ordered by the government, unlike many other history books from that time.
