Hitt, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hitt is a small place in the northwest part of Scotland County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

This community is located on Missouri Route B. It's about eight miles northwest of a town called Memphis. The border between Missouri and Iowa is also very close, just over two miles north of Hitt.

The History of Hitt

The community of Hitt has an interesting past. At one time, it was known by a different name: "Billupsville."

A post office was first opened in Billupsville in 1859. This was a place where people could send and receive letters and packages. Just one year later, in 1860, the name of the post office, and likely the community, was changed to Hitt. The post office stayed open for many years but eventually closed in 1914.

The name "Hitt" was chosen to honor a person named Robert R. Hitt. He was a legislator from Illinois. A legislator is someone who is elected to help make laws for a state or country.
