The Hobart Building is a tall office building in San Francisco, California. It is located in the busy financial district of the city. You can find it on Market Street, close to Montgomery and 2nd Streets.
This building was finished very quickly in 1914. It took only eleven months to build! When it was new, it was the second tallest building in San Francisco. It has 21 floors and stands about 87 meters (285 feet) tall. A famous architect named Willis Polk designed this impressive structure.
Building History
The Hobart Estate Company built the Hobart Building. It stands where the company's old offices used to be. The company's founder, Walter S. Hobart, chose this spot in the 1880s. He liked its great location at the start of 2nd Street. This street was once a main road leading to the fancy Rincon Hill neighborhood.
The Hobart Building was a favorite project for its designer, Willis Polk. It shows off a beautiful style called neoclassical architecture. This means it looks like old Greek and Roman buildings. The outside is decorated with sculpted terra cotta, which is a type of baked clay. It also has fancy Baroque designs. Inside, you can see handcrafted brass and Italian marble.
Unique Design
The Hobart Building has a very unusual shape. This is because the land it was built on is not a perfect square or rectangle. It is an uneven, many-sided shape.
In 1967, a building next to it was torn down. This made the Hobart Building's unique side visible. Now, its special shape stands out even more.
A City Landmark
The City of San Francisco recognized the Hobart Building as an important landmark. It was given this special status in 1983. This means the building is protected for its historical and architectural value.
