Hobbs is a small community in west Fisher County, Texas, United States. It's found where two roads, Farm to Market Roads 611 and 1614, meet. It's about 20 miles (32 km) east of Snyder. This area is part of the "Rolling Plains" region. It sits in the valley of the Clear Fork Brazos River.

History of Hobbs

In the mid-1880s, many settlers moved to this area. They came to start a new community. A post office opened on May 26, 1888. The people living there named the town Hobbs. They chose this name to honor Vachel Hobbs Anderson, one of the first settlers.

Sadly, the post office closed on February 15, 1910. By 1914, Hobbs had a general store. It also had telephone service. About 45 people lived there.

Electricity came to Hobbs in 1939. By 1940, the community had grown. There were three businesses, a school, and a Baptist church. About 70 people lived in Hobbs then. The Hobbs Co-op Cotton Gin started in the 1940s. A cotton gin helps separate cotton fibers. From 1970 to 2000, the population stayed around 91 people.

Learning in Hobbs

In 1887, Robert Martin, a Baptist preacher, started a school in Hobbs. He first used a tent for classes. The next year, a building was put up for both a school and a church. This church-school was called Buffalo. It was named after Buffalo Creek, a nearby stream.

A new school building was built in 1908. The school's name was changed to Hobbs. This new school became the main gathering place for the community. In 1925, several small schools joined together. They formed the Hobbs Rural High School District. A new two-story brick high school was then built.

Hobbs High School was replaced with an even newer building in 1956. However, this school closed in 1989. Now, students from Hobbs travel by bus to schools in Rotan, Roby, or Snyder.
