The Hogback Covered Bridge is a very old and special bridge near Winterset, Iowa. It's called "Hogback" because of a nearby rocky ridge that looks like a hog's back. This bridge was built way back in 1884.
It was made by two people, Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster. They built it over the North River. The bridge is about 106 feet long, which is like three school buses lined up! It has a special design called a Town lattice truss system. This design uses many crisscross wooden beams to make the bridge strong. It also has strong steel supports underneath.
A Special Bridge in Iowa
The Hogback Covered Bridge is a very important part of history. It's one of only a few covered bridges left in Madison County. Long ago, there were 19 covered bridges there. Now, only six remain, and Hogback is one of them!
Keeping the Bridge Strong
In 1992, the bridge was fixed up to keep it safe and strong. This work cost about $118,810. It's important to take care of old buildings and bridges so they can last for many more years.
A National Treasure
Because it's so old and special, the Hogback Covered Bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States. It's a great place to visit and learn about how bridges were built a long time ago.
