Exploring the North River
River's Journey and Size
The North River is about 103 miles (166 km) long. It collects water from an area of about 349.2 square miles (904 km²). This area is called its drainage basin or watershed. All the water from this area eventually flows into the North River.
The North River is part of a much larger water system. Its water eventually reaches the Mississippi River. From there, it flows all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.
Where the River Starts and Ends
The North River begins in southern Guthrie County. This is northeast of a town called Casey. It then flows generally towards the east.
The river travels through several counties in Iowa. These include Adair, Madison, and Warren counties. It flows past the town of Carlisle.
Finally, the North River enters southeastern Polk County. About 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Des Moines, it joins the larger Des Moines River.
North Branch North River
In Madison County, the North River gets a little extra water. A smaller stream flows into it there. This stream is called the North Branch North River. It's a short tributary that adds to the main river's flow.
