The Hojiblanca olive is a special type of olive tree. It comes from Lucena in Spain. Its name means "white leaf" in Spanish. This is because the underside of its leaves looks silvery-white. People use Hojiblanca olives for two main things: eating them whole and making delicious olive oil.

What is the Hojiblanca Olive Like?

The Hojiblanca is one of many different olive types found in Spain. It produces a large fruit, weighing up to about 4.8 grams. The olive itself is round. Inside, the fleshy part of the olive is about eight times bigger than its stone (the pit). When you press these olives, they give about 17-19% oil. This olive type is mostly found in an area called Priego de Córdoba in Spain.

What Does Hojiblanca Olive Oil Taste Like?

Hojiblanca olives have a unique flavor. When you first taste them, they can be slightly sweet. Then, you might notice a bitter taste, a bit like unripe fruits. After that, there's often a pleasant almond taste that stays in your mouth.

Where are Hojiblanca Olives Grown?

Hojiblanca olives make up about 16% of all the olives grown in Andalucia, a region in southern Spain. They are mainly grown in the eastern part of Seville, the southern part of Cordoba, and the northern part of Málaga.

When are Hojiblanca Olives Picked?

In Andalucia, farmers pick Hojiblanca olives at different times. If they want green or black olives for eating, they pick them in late autumn, around November or December. If they are making olive oil, they pick the olives later in the season, usually in March or April. These olives are very popular for eating whole. They are also used to make olive oil, even though they don't produce as much oil as some other Spanish olive types, like the Picual olive.
