Building a Business
Who Built the Factory?
The Hollenstein Wagon and Carriage Factory was built in 1876. It was started by a man named John J. Hollenstein, Sr., and his wife, Dominica. They had moved to the United States all the way from Switzerland. John Hollenstein was a skilled craftsman. He wanted to create a place where he could build and repair wagons and carriages.
Life and Work in One Place
The factory building was more than just a workshop. It was also the home for the Hollenstein family. Imagine living right where you work! This was common for many business owners back then. John Hollenstein ran his business for many years, making wagons that people used for travel and work.
From Factory to Museum
New Owners and New Uses
John Hollenstein, Sr. continued to run the factory until 1908. At that time, he sold the business to his son. After that, the building changed hands many times. It was bought and sold by different owners and used for various purposes over the years. Each new owner found a different way to use the old factory building.
A Museum Today
Today, the Hollenstein Wagon and Carriage Factory has a new and exciting purpose. It is now the Hollenstein Wagon & Carriage Factory Museum. This museum is run by the Mayville Historical Society. It helps people learn about the history of wagon making and what life was like in Mayville long ago. Visitors can explore the building and imagine what it was like when wagons and carriages were being built there.
