A Look Back at the Hollenstein Factory
Building a Business
The Hollenstein factory was built in 1876 by John J. Hollenstein, Sr. and his wife, Dominica. They had moved to the United States from Switzerland. The building was not just a factory; it was also their family home.
John Hollenstein ran the business for many years. His factory made wagons and carriages. These were very important for travel and work back then. People used them for moving goods and getting around.
From Factory to Museum
John Hollenstein, Sr. ran the factory until 1908. He then sold the business to his son. After that, the building had many different owners. It was used for various purposes over the years.
Today, this historic building has a new life. It is now the Hollenstein Wagon & Carriage Factory Museum. The Mayville Historical Society operates the museum. Visitors can learn about the factory's past. They can also see what life was like when wagons and carriages were common.
