The Story of Hollis

Damage from a tornado in Hollis, 1909

Hollis was first called Christie. It got this name from W. J. Christie, who owned the land where the community was built.

Hollis was an important place for sending and receiving goods. It was located where two major train lines met: the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad. This made it a busy "shipping point" for many years.

On May 14, 1909, a powerful tornado struck Hollis around five o'clock in the evening. The storm caused a lot of damage and sadly, some people lost their lives. Reports said that almost the entire community was "swept away" by the tornado. Only three buildings were left standing without damage. The total cost of the damage was estimated to be over $50,000 in 1909 money. By 1910, only about 50 people lived in Hollis.
