What is Hollow Earth About?
The story of Hollow Earth follows twins named Matt and Emily, often called "Em." They have a very special and secret power. Because of their amazing imaginations, they can make artwork actually come to life! Imagine a painting suddenly moving or a drawing stepping right off the page.
However, this incredible ability is also very dangerous. Some bad people, called antagonists, want to use the twins' power for their own plans. They want to use it to break into a hidden place called Hollow Earth. This mysterious realm is where all kinds of scary demons and monsters are trapped. The twins must protect their power and stop these villains from unleashing chaos.
Where Did the Ideas for the Book Come From?

The authors got many ideas for Hollow Earth from real places and things. Part of the story happens on a make-believe island called Auchinmurn. This island was inspired by two real islands in Scotland: Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae. These islands are located near the town of Largs. The name "Auchinmurn" is a special tribute to Carole and John's grandmother, whose name was Murn Butler.
Other real places also appear in the book. You might read about Glasgow's famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Also, the "Pencil" Monument near Largs is featured. This monument is a landmark that remembers an old battle called the Battle of Largs.
Art That Comes to Life
Art and paintings are a very important part of the Hollow Earth story. Many of the artworks mentioned in the book are based on real paintings. They are inspired by famous artists like Georges Seurat, William Blake, Vincent van Gogh, Henry Fuseli, and Salvador Dalí. This makes the magical art in the book feel even more real!
How the Characters Got Their Names
The authors also shared how they chose the names for their main characters. The female hero, Emily, was named after Carole Barrowman's own middle name. It was also the first name of their grandmother on their father's side, Emily Barrowman. The male hero, Matt, was chosen simply because it is John Barrowman's favorite boy's name.
