Holly Black is an American writer and editor. She is famous for her amazing fantasy books for kids and young adults. You might know her from her popular series like The Spiderwick Chronicles or The Folk of the Air. She has won important awards like the Nebula Award and a Newbery Honor!

Early Life and Education
Holly Black was born in West Long Branch, New Jersey in 1971. When she was little, her family lived in an old Victorian house. She went to The College of New Jersey and studied English. While she was studying, she worked on medical journals. She thought about becoming a librarian, but writing was her true passion!
She was inspired to write fantasy stories by other authors like Garth Nix and Tamora Pierce. She also loved fairy tales, and many creators helped inspire her magical stories.
In 1999, Holly married her high school sweetheart, Theo Black. He is an illustrator and web designer. Today, she lives in Massachusetts.
Literary Career
Modern Faerie Tales
Holly Black's first novel was Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale, published in 2002. This book started a series about modern fairy tales. Two more books followed in the same world. Valiant (2005) won a special award for young adult fantasy books called the Andre Norton Award.
The Spiderwick Chronicles
In 2003, Holly Black started The Spiderwick Chronicles with artist Tony DiTerlizzi. This series became super popular! The last book in the series even reached the top of the New York Times Bestseller list. A movie based on the series came out in 2008, and Holly Black helped produce it.
The Curse Workers
White Cat, the first book in her Curse Workers Series, came out in 2010. This was followed by Red Glove (2011) and Black Heart (2012). These books tell a story about people who can do magic with a touch.
Magisterium
In 2012, Holly Black teamed up with author Cassandra Clare to write a five-book series called Magisterium. The first book, The Iron Trial, was published in 2014. The last book in the series, The Golden Tower, came out in 2018.
The Folk of the Air
The Cruel Prince, the first book of The Folk of the Air, was published in 2017. It was very popular and nominated for awards. The next book, The Wicked King (2018), became a No. 1 New York Times Bestseller! The final book, The Queen of Nothing, was released in 2019.
Holly Black has talked about this series in interviews. She said that when she finished The Queen of Nothing, she knew she wanted to write more about some of the characters later. This led to her writing the Stolen Heir duology.
Standalone Novels
Holly Black has also written books that are not part of a series.
- The Coldest Girl in Coldtown was released in 2013. It was a finalist for the Andre Norton Award.
- Doll Bones was published in 2013. This book won a Newbery Medal and a Mythopoeic Award!
- The Darkest Part of the Forest was published in 2015.
- Her first book for adults, Book of Night, came out in 2022.
Holly Black has also written many short stories and helped edit several collections of fantasy and science fiction stories.
