Hollygrove or sometimes Holly Grove (which means Garrán an Chuilinn in Irish) is a small area of land called a townland. It covers about 283 acres (1.14 square kilometers). Hollygrove is located in County Galway, in the country of Ireland.
This townland is part of the Athleague parish. It is also very close to another townland called Coalpits. Hollygrove is right on the border between County Galway and County Roscommon.
Exploring Hollygrove Lake
Hollygrove Lake is a beautiful lake that covers about 50 acres (20 hectares). It is found between the towns of Ballygar and Athleague. This lake is connected to the River Suck system.
The lake is quite shallow, usually about 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep. However, it does have two deeper parts. Hollygrove Lake is a great place for fishing. It is home to many fish, especially tench and pike.
A Look at History: Griffith's Valuation
Between 1848 and 1864, a big survey was done in Ireland called Griffith's valuation. This survey helped to record who owned and leased land. It showed who was farming different areas.
In Hollygrove, this survey listed several people who leased the land they farmed. This means they paid to use the land, but they did not own it. This record helps us understand who lived and worked in Hollygrove a long time ago.
