Holsum Bread is a well-known American brand of packaged white bread. It's the kind of bread you often find sliced and ready to eat in stores. The name "Holsum" was used by many local bakeries across the country in the early 1900s.

In 1908, a company called W. E. Long Company from Chicago bought the special rights to use the "Holsum" name all over the country. They then created a group of bakeries, like a team, to sell bread using the same recipe under the Holsum brand in different cities. This helped make Holsum a popular name for bread.

One of the first and most important bakeries in this group was the Phoenix Bakery. It later changed its name to Holsum Bakery in 1929. This happened after its owners bought the rights to use the Holsum name for their bakery and bread. Much later, in 2008, a large food company called Flowers Foods bought the Holsum Bakery.

The W. E. Long Company was started by William Edgar Long. In 1928, he came up with the idea of packaging sliced bread. This was a big deal because it made bread much easier for people to use. He did this two years before another famous brand, Wonder Bread, started selling its own packaged sliced bread. Today, the Holsum brand name is still owned by the Long Company group. This group has grown and now sells Holsum bread in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Who Makes Holsum Bread?

Many different bakeries are allowed to make and sell Holsum Bread. These bakeries are called "licensees." They get permission from the Long Company to use the Holsum brand name and recipe. This helps Holsum bread be available in many places.

Here are some of the bakeries that make Holsum Bread:

  • Aunt Millie's Bakery
  • Bimbo Bakeries USA
  • Flowers Foods
  • Gold Medal Bakery
  • Holsum De Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Baking Company)
