Holy Ghost Catholic Church is a special place in Dubuque, Iowa. It is a Catholic parish. This church is part of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The church, its school, the rectory (where the priest lives), and the convent (where nuns used to live) are all part of a historic district. These buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
History of Holy Ghost Parish
The Holy Ghost parish started in 1896. This happened because many people were moving to the northern parts of Dubuque. Another church, Sacred Heart Church, was already there. It had a large building built in 1888 that could seat 1,100 people.
But even with this big church, it was not enough for the growing population. So, the Holy Ghost parish was created to help.
First, a building was made that was both a church and a school. It was built on Central Avenue. Later, a bigger church building was constructed. It was designed by an architect named Guido Beck. This new church was built right next to the older building.
In July 2001, some big changes happened for Catholic schools in Dubuque. Wahlert High School and all the Catholic elementary schools joined together. They formed a new system called Holy Family Catholic Schools. This meant some older schools had to close. These included Holy Trinity, Nativity, Sacred Heart, St. Joseph Key West, St. Joseph The Worker, St. Mary's, and St. Patrick's.
Today, besides Holy Ghost, the other elementary schools in the system are Resurrection Elementary School, St. Anthony Elementary School, and St. Columbkille Elementary School.
