The Holy Trinity Cathedral, also known as Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, is a Greek Orthodox church in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. It was built in 1923. This church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 because of its important history.
History of the Church
The Greek Orthodox community in Salt Lake City started its first church in 1905. This was the 14th Greek Orthodox church community in the United States. It was also the oldest one between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean.
After a meeting in January 1905, the community bought land for a church. They got a loan to help build it. The first priest arrived from Greece in April. The first church building was officially opened on October 29, 1905. It was named Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
This church was a very important part of "Greek Town" in Salt Lake City. This area was home to many immigrants who were not part of the main local church. The Holy Trinity Church served not only Greek immigrants but also Serbian and Russian immigrants.
The community quickly grew too big for the first church building. Around 1920, they started planning a new, larger church. The old building was sold. The land for the new Holy Trinity Cathedral was bought at Third South and Second West.
The first stone of the new church, called the cornerstone, was placed on August 23, 1923. The first church service in the new building happened on August 13, 1924. The new church was officially dedicated on August 2, 1925, after its building loan was paid off.
The church's design is called Byzantine architecture. This style was quite unusual for the Utah area. A local architecture company, Pope and Burton, designed the church. They worked with N. A. Dokas, a Greek architect from Chicago.
Holy Trinity became a "cathedral" in 1968. This happened during a visit from Archbishop Iakovos. He was the leader of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral had a big renovation between 1997 and 2005. This project cost about $4.2 million.
Hellenic Cultural Museum
The lower floor of the Holy Trinity Cathedral building has the Hellenic Cultural Museum. This museum opened in 1992.
The museum's exhibits show the early history of Greek immigration to Utah. They also focus on what life was like for immigrants in the Salt Lake Valley.
