History of Holy Trinity Church
A New Beginning for Greek Immigrants
The Greek Orthodox community in Salt Lake City started its first church in 1905. This was a big deal! It became the 14th Greek Orthodox church in the United States. It was also the oldest one between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean.
In January 1905, the community had a meeting. They bought land for a church building. They also got a loan to help build it. The first priest came from Greece in April. The first church building was officially opened on October 29, 1905. It was named Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Growing and Building a New Church
The church was very important in "Greek Town." This was a part of Salt Lake City where many immigrants lived. Besides Greeks, the church also welcomed Serbian and Russian immigrants. The community grew quickly. Soon, the first church building was too small.
Around 1920, plans for a new church began. The old building was sold. New land was bought for the current Holy Trinity Cathedral. This new spot was at Third South and Second West. The first stone of the new church was placed on August 23, 1923. The first church service was held on August 13, 1924. The new building was officially opened on August 2, 1925. This happened after the building loan was fully paid off.
Unique Architecture and Design
The design of the church is called Byzantine architecture. This style was very unusual for Utah. A local architecture company, Pope and Burton, designed the church. They worked with N. A. Dokas, a Greek architect from Chicago. N. A. Dokas also designed a similar Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago.
In 1968, Holy Trinity became a "cathedral." This happened during a visit from Archbishop Iakovos. He was the leader of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral had a big update between 1997 and 2005. This renovation cost about $4.2 million.
Hellenic Cultural Museum
Exploring Greek History in Utah
The lower part of the church building has the Hellenic Cultural Museum. This museum opened in 1992. Its exhibits show the early history of Greek immigration to Utah. They also show what life was like for immigrants in the Salt Lake Valley.
