Holy Trinity Church, Wysall is a historic parish church in the Church of England. It is located in the small village of Wysall. This beautiful church has stood for many centuries. It is a special place for the local community.

A Look Back at Holy Trinity Church's History

Holy Trinity Church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It stands proudly at the south end of Wysall village. The church is built on a small hill, so you can see it from far away.

When Was the Church Built?

The church is very old, dating back to the Middle Ages. Some parts of the building are from the 13th century. This means they are over 700 years old!

What Does the Church Look Like?

The church has a tall tower with a pointed spire. It also has a south porch, a main hall called a nave, and a south aisle. The chancel is the area near the altar. The churchyard, where people are buried, has a round wall.

The tower has a special design called Gothic architecture. This style was popular from the late 13th to 14th century. The lower part of the tower has a window in the Perpendicular style. This suggests it was built in the late 14th century. However, some parts of the north wall are even older. They show an Early English style, which is about 100 years older than the tower.

The south porch was fixed up in the late 1800s. Other work has been done to keep this old church in good shape. The windows are especially interesting. They show a beautiful and simple design from the late Decorated period of Gothic art.

Inside the Church

Inside the church, you can see special decorations. These honor important families like the Sacheverell and Armstrong families. Some of the original wooden pews (church benches) are still there. The pulpit, where the priest gives sermons, has also survived. These old pieces are now at the west end of the church. The roof of the chancel is very old and worth seeing.

In 1853, a book called White's Directory described the church. It mentioned old monuments belonging to the Armstrong family. It also talked about former vicars, who were the priests of the parish.

What is a Parish Church?

Holy Trinity Church is a "parish church." This means it serves a specific local area called a parish. It is part of a group of churches that work together. This group includes:

  • St. Peter and St. Paul's Church, Widmerpool
  • Church of St. Mary and All Saints, Willoughby-on-the-Wolds
  • Holy Trinity Church, Wysall
