The Province of York, also called the Northern Province, is one of two main areas that make up the Church of England. It includes 12 dioceses, which are like church districts. These districts cover the northern part of England and the Isle of Man.
York became an important church center in the year 735 AD. Ecgbert was the first Archbishop there. An archbishop is a very senior bishop. The archbishops of York once thought they had power over Scotland, but this never fully happened. Their claims stopped when the Archdiocese of St Andrews was created in Scotland.
The main leader of the Province of York is the Archbishop of York. This archbishop is the second most senior archbishop in the Church of England. York Minster is the main church for the entire Province of York. It is often called the "mother church" because it is so important.
How Church Areas Have Changed
Over time, the areas covered by the Church of England have changed. New church districts, called dioceses, were created. This happened to help manage the growing number of churches and people.
In 1836, the Diocese of Ripon was formed. Later, more dioceses were created in the north of England:
- Manchester in 1847
- Liverpool in 1880
- Newcastle in 1882
- Wakefield in 1888
- Sheffield in 1914
- Bradford in 1919
- Blackburn in 1926
- Leeds in 2014
The Story of Southwell Diocese
The Diocese of Southwell has a unique history. In 1837, a part of the York area called the archdeaconry of Nottingham moved to the Diocese of Lincoln. This meant it became part of the Province of Canterbury, which is the other main area of the Church of England.
Then, in 1884, the counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire joined to form the new Diocese of Southwell. Later, in 1927, the Diocese of Derby was created. This meant Derbyshire was no longer part of Southwell's area. Finally, in 1935, the Diocese of Southwell moved back to the Province of York.
