Holy Trinity Monastery, East Hendred facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Holy Trinity Monastery was a special place where Benedictine nuns lived and prayed. It was located in East Hendred, Oxfordshire, from 2004 to 2012. These nuns are part of the Roman Catholic Church. In 2012, they moved to a new home in Wormbridge, Herefordshire. Now, their monastery is called Howton Grove Priory. They still keep their dedication to the Most Holy Trinity.

The Monastery's Beginning

This monastery was started in 2004 by a bishop named Crispian Hollis. It was the first time in over 50 years that a new monastery for Benedictine nuns was built in England. The first nuns who came here were from another monastery called Stanbrook Abbey in Worcester.

This community of nuns is independent. It is called a "monastery of diocesan right". This means it is under the local bishop, not directly under the Pope. The nuns follow a monastic way of life.

How the Nuns Help Others

The nuns support themselves and their good deeds through their work. They mainly focus on making books and creating websites.

They create audio books for people who are blind or have trouble seeing. They also run a special library service where they lend books by mail. Their monastery website is very well known. It uses new ways to share their spiritual message. In 2009, their website won a special award called the Premier Christian Media People's Choice Award.

The monastery also has an important library. It contains many books on modern American and High Anglican theology. Students and other interested people can visit the library by making an appointment.

Where the Nuns Live

The nuns' first home was the presbytery, which is a priest's house, in East Hendred. They have now bought a renovated barn. This new home is on the edge of the Golden Valley in Herefordshire.
