About the Home Savings Bank Building
When the Home Savings Bank Building was finished in 1927, it was the tallest building in Albany. But just one year later, the Alfred E. Smith Building became taller. Later, in 1973, the Erastus Corning Tower was built. It became the tallest building in Albany and still holds that title today. Even though other buildings are taller, the Home Savings Bank Building has always been the tallest private building in Albany since it was built.
Unique Art and Design
The building has special Art Deco designs. You can see unique images of Native Americans and early settlers. These artworks are found near the roof and by the main entrance on the street level. The artist, Rene Paul Chambellan, created these designs using decorative metal and terra cotta.
Inside, the original banking area on the ground floor is very impressive. It has beautiful marble walls and very high ceilings. You can also see different historic seals there.
Modern Use and History
In recent years, the building has been updated. It now serves as a modern office building in the city center. It also has advanced equipment for telecommunications. This means it helps connect phones and computers.
As of 2010, the large banking lobby is used for special events. A company leases it for banquets and wedding parties.
In 1980, the building was recognized as an important part of the Downtown Albany Historic District. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Being a "contributing property" means it helps make the historic area special.
The Home Savings Bank Building was owned by Heights Real Estate Company, based in New York City, as of 2010.
